You need the following details to hand, whether applying on-line or by telephone:

• Your Vehicle Registration document.
• Your renewal notice (should show your No Claim Discount and any NCD protected cover).
• The date of your last claim and if you were to blame, the amount paid by the insurer.

On-line quotes are cheaper because of their reduced overheads. A telephone quote from the same broker will be dearer. However some people find the on-line form completion tedious and inflexible.

Water Meter.

Members who have a water meter save at least £100 compared to those who have not. This applies to one or two people per household.

Provided it is not impracticable or uneconomic for the company to do so all meter installations are now free. The Government made this law in April 2000.

This extends to household tenants who do not need to seek their landlord's permission as long as they have tenancy agreements of more than 6 months.

Companies are expected to fit meters within 3 months of your application and your measured charges will start from the installation date.

Compensation may be payable if companies fail to meet the 3 month deadline.
